Episode 1: A New Frontier
Location: Location: Starbase 21 – Command Briefing Room
Timeline: 2424.06.17 0800 Hours
Vice Admiral Men Bolin stood behind the briefing room console, fingers interlaced as his round, cerulean face held a neutral, practiced expression. The Bolian’s crisp white uniform contrasted against the bronze and steel backdrop of the operations suite aboard Starbase 21.
Across from him stood Captain Yoralig Gearev, silent, composed, unreadable.
“Captain,” Bolin began, his voice a low tenor edged with clarity and formality, “I don’t imagine you need me to tell you what a critical moment this is—for your crew, for your ship, and for the Federation.”
He tapped the console. A holographic projection of a sector map expanded between them, marked with a glowing outline.
“You are being diverted to the Dran’kora Expanse—volatile, largely uncharted, and full of unresolved tensions since the Dominion War. Your destination: Outpost Telios IV.”
He gestured, and a blinking red icon pulsed on the map.
“Telios IV went dark seventy-two hours ago. We lost all contact with the science team stationed there. Standard protocols haven’t yielded results. We need eyes on the ground, and your ship is the only one close enough with the systems and crew to handle what this may become.”
The admiral’s voice lowered, edged with concern.
“There’s more. A subspace anomaly has formed near Tholian-claimed space—only a few light-years from the outpost. We’re not yet certain if the rift is natural, artificial, or a byproduct of something older. The Tholians have increased border patrols and are issuing formal protests already. This could spiral if not handled carefully.”
He stepped around the table, locking eyes with Gearev.
“Your standing orders are threefold: reestablish contact with Telios IV and assess the situation; investigate the rift and determine if it poses a threat to Federation interests; and avoid escalating tensions with the Tholian Assembly at all costs.”
A beat passed as Bolin studied the captain.
“I know you’re just off the line from your shakedown cruise, but we don’t have the luxury of easing into things. I chose you and the Vanguard because you understand nuance. You know how to step quietly—and when to stand firm.”
He offered a data rod, pale fingers extending it across the table.
“Mission parameters, encrypted reports on the anomaly, and a preliminary briefing on Telios IV’s personnel. You depart in eighteen hours.”
Gearev took the data rod, turning it once between his fingers before sliding it into a jacket pocket. His voice was calm, deep, and measured.
"Understood, Admiral. We'll proceed with caution—and clarity."
He glanced at the map. “If the Tholians want a confrontation, we won’t give them one. But if they test us…” He let the sentence hang, unfinished, but firm.
Then, quieter: “My people know how to handle silence. We’ll find out what happened at Telios.”
Bolin’s expression softened for the first time. “That’s what I’m counting on.”
A pause.
“This is how legacies start, Captain. Not with certainty—but with resolve.”
Gearev nodded once. “Then let ours begin in the dark.”
