The admin offices were quiet this time of morning—just the gentle hum of consoles, the faint whir of a PADD syncing with the department server, and the subdued hum of the ship beneath it all. It was a quiet Jacob Reid had come to appreciate. He liked arriving early. Captain Yoralig Gearev didn’t look up immediately. He finished the sentence he was dictating into the terminal—one concerning an intelligence briefing from Starfleet Command that made less sense the more he read it—then set the PADD aside.

Behind the transporter pad, the Zaranite stood. He was assisting with the calibrating the transporter buffers. This one was testing with a .01 variance. It was within operating parameters for organic beings, but the engineering team at the shipyard wanted it fixed. Makan had been an expert at transporters a earlier in his career, so he took it on.
